Intro to the Internet
Overview
All students with
in the design school can have access to unlimited webspace with database
support if you contact Jamie (jamie.steane@unn.ac.uk). This space will
be regularly checked for illegal files such as licensed software and copyrighted
music files so don't upload them! The penalty for uploading such files
may result in public prosecution - you have been warned!
Once Jamie has allocated
you webspace you will have to get your FTP details by going through 'Blackboard'
on the University website. Use the following steps:
Instructions
- Email Jamie (jamie.steane@unn.ac.uk)
and wait for him to confirm the space has been set up for you.
- Go the Univiersity
website and click on the 'Current Student' link, then click on the top
link 'Blackboard Login' alternative click on this link: http://elearning.northumbria.ac.uk/
- Use your usual
ID and password to login to Blackboard. FYI Black board is an e-learning
environment used by the university for the delivery of briefs and lesson
resources but we don't use it on our course at the moment because we
use unnerve.com instead.
- Once you have
logged into blackboard click on the webspace link on the tools palette.
This will take you to the login page for the university's external webspace:
(arnosgrove.unn.ac.uk/webspace.html)
- Once you have
reached this page you will have to login using your username and a NEW
PASSWORD. To get your new password type in your username and then click
the checkbox for 'forgotten your password?' and it will be emailed to
your UNN email account.
- Once you have
received your new password you can login using the above page.
- Now that you have
logged onto the E-tools site there are several things you need to do
but you can start by changing your password to match your usual university
password (or an alternative) by clicking on the change password icon:

- To manage your
webspace, find out your ftp details, login and password click on the
icon of the world:
- Your FTP host
and www address for the website will be reveal here:
- To find out your
ftp user ID and password click on the purple link shown in the illustration
above.
- Now that you have
all the information you require to access your webspace you can create
your site in Dreamweaver using the FTP details above.
- IMPORTANT your
site must be created and place in a folder called 'public_html' for
your site to be viewed from a web browser.

click on the help link available from the My Account option on the Tools
Palette.
